Gloucestershire 212 for (Klinger 95*, Cockbain 69*) beat Essex 182 (Howell 3-28)
30 runsScorecard Michael Klinger hit 95 as Gloucestershire closed in on a home
tie in the NatWest T20 Blast quarter-finals with a 30-run South Group victory
over Essex at Cheltenham.
Cordy Glenn Jersey .The group leaders posted
212 for 1 on the small College Ground, Klinger receiving excellent support from
Hamish Marshall and Ian Cockbain, whose unbeaten 65 came off just 35 balls. In
reply, Essex made 182 for 9, Dan Lawrence top-scoring with 35 and Benny Howell
taking 3 for 28 from his four overs. The result took Gloucestershire to 19 points
from 13 games, while Essex remain on ten with work to do in their final four
group fixtures to reach the knockout stage.Marshall, in his final Cheltenham
Festival before leaving Gloucestershire at the end of the season, was the
initial aggressor in an opening stand of 75 with Klinger that occupied 8.4
overs.Marshall had faced 28 balls, hitting seven boundaries when driving a
return catch to Ravi Bopara. It was the only Essex success as Cockbain joined
Klinger in an unbroken partnership of 137 in 11.2 overs, which delighted the
5,000 sell-out crowd.Klinger reached his half-century with a reverse sweep for
four off Bopara, having faced 41 deliveries, but it was Cockbain, who produced
the more explosive hitting. The consistent No. 3 batsman hit the first six of the
game off Ashar Zaidi and went on to smash three more maximums and 6 fours,
reaching his half-century off just 28 balls.Essex were unable to protect the
short boundaries on both sides of the pitch as Klinger began to match his
partner shot for shot. By the end of the innings the Gloucestershire captain had
hit 13 fours and two sixes in his 57-ball knock. The visitors reply began badly
when Matt Taylor bowled Kishen Velani for a duck in the first over and followed
up by having Tom Westley caught at mid-wicket off a miscued pull shot with the
total on 18 at the end of the third over.Nick Browne hit a big six over
midwicket off Liam Norwell, but the Essex woes continued when Bopara was caught
at short third-man off Howell and Ryan ten Doeschate was run out by Klingers
throw to the wicketkeeper as Browne attempted a quick single to mid-wicket.It
looked a very close call and ten Doeschate stood still for several second before
angrily swishing his bat and walking off. At the end of the six-over Powerplay
the visitors were 46 for 4.Browne was caught at deep mid-wicket off Howell to
make it 58 for 5 in the eighth over. At the halfway stage of their innings Essex
still required 131.Lawrence, dropped on 21, looked dangerous until, on 36, he
lofted Graeme van Buurens left-arm spin to Cockbain at long-on. And when Zaidi
was bowled by Howell aiming a big hit it was 122 for 7, with the contest as good
as over.

. The 18-year-old American had five birdies in her bogey-free round for a

being sexually abused by Jerry Sandusky in a Penn State shower more than 15
years ago gave conflicting statements to authorities and was considered to lack
credibility, investigators said during an appeal hearing Monday. The man has
settled with Penn State based on a claim that he is Victim 2 and was seen by
graduate assistant Mike McQueary being attacked by Sandusky, then an assistant
football coach, in 2001. The man gave differing statements to Sanduskys lawyers
and to police investigators, according to testimony, and neither side called him
to the stand during the 2012 trial. The identity of Victim 2, and the mans claim
to be Victim 2, figures into Sanduskys bid for a new trial or to have charges
dismissed because of a reference during lead prosecutor Joe McGettigans closing
argument before a jury convicted Sandusky of 45 counts of abuse involving 10
victims.McGettigan told jurors there were others unknown to us, to others
presently known to God but not to us. The appeals hearing is Sanduskys chance to
prove his claim that McGettigan was referring to Victim 2 and so he knew that
statement was false. The man who claims to be Victim 2 contacted Sanduskys
then-lawyer, Joe Amendola, soon after Sandusky was first charged in November
2011 and gave a statement saying he was in the shower that night but had not
been abused. He had also made a similar denial of abuse to investigators in
September 2011, testified Cpl. Joseph Leiter, a retired state police
investigator. But he subsequently hired attorney Andrew Shubin, who testified
Monday on the second day of the hearing that he believes his client is Victim 2
and was raped by Sandusky, who was in court. He is serving a 30- to 60-year
sentence.Asked if he had aany doubts, Shubin said he was not sure how to answer
that.
Custom Buffalo Bills Jerseys. . But he said
the man is his client and he would not represent anyone he did not
believe.Shubin declined to answer when asked whether he ever tried to hide the
mans whereabouts from police and prosecutors, citing attorney-client privilege.I
have never spoken about that issue and never waived that privilege, Shubin
testified.Anthony Sassano, an agent with the attorney generals office, testified
that he heard from someone -- he said he wasnt sure whom -- that the man was
hidden at hunting camp somewhere so we couldnt find him to interview him.Sassano
said that the man contradicted himself to agents when asked if he ever told
anyone of abuse and that his drawing of the locker room where he claims to have
been seen by McQueary did not fit the actual Lasch Building locker room. That led
me to believe he was never in that particular locker room, Sassano
testified.Prosecutors did not find the man credible, Sassano said.I dont know if
they formed their opinion off my opinion or they had their own separate opinion,
Sassano said. We all arrived at the same conclusion.Testimony on Monday also
delved into claims of improper leaks of material from the grand jury that
investigated Sandusky before he was charged. The hearing is expected to conclude
Tuesday.Sandusky testified during the first day of the hearing and strongly
denied his guilt. He has already lost direct appeals to the states Supreme and
Superior courts and is now seeking relief under the Post-Conviction Relief Act
that is confined to newly discovered evidence, constitutional violations and
ineffective lawyering.
